Carey, ID

We packed up and left the beautiful spot on the river in Lava Hot Springs and headed north on I15 through the city of Pocatello then turned west onto US 26 towards Carey, ID. The plan in Carey was another surprise for the girls at a Harvest Hosts with a unique business model! On the way we passed "Atomic City" where in the 50's Nuclear Energy testing delivered the first nuclear power plant! A few miles on we entered Craters of the Moon National Monument and drove on past the truly lunar looking landscape. Finally we pulled into Carey and pulled up to our host for the evening, Sawtooth Reindeer!

Sawtooth is a working Reindeer farm that offers Reindeer experiences, and gifts. The owners are a local Idahoan family that grew up breeding livestock and found their way to working with Reindeer. We got to go into the pens and feed the female Reindeer the females also have antlers just like the males. It turns out Reindeer are remarkably hearty creatures with amazing temperature regulation systems in their bodies which make them uniquely equipped to handle very cold as well as very hot conditions.

Sawtooth Reindeer had 2 new young babies, and around 10 total Reindeer. Everyone's favorite activity was feeding the gentle giants. Kelly also adds that her favorite part of visiting a reindeer farm is by far that we do NOT have any livestock to take care of! Our three dogs are enough work, could you imagine Kelly trying to keep a Reindeer?!?! It wouldn't be long before it was sharing our house with us!

After meeting the renindeer we headed into town for some solid farm country staples from the local gas station, a few slices of Pizza, some wraps, and a 6er of yellow bellies and we settled in for the night. Tomorrow we need to get up early and get to Craters of the Moon before it gets as hot as the sun and none of us want to be outside hiking through Lava Fields!
